Happy Leadership Promotes Successful Teamwork

The need of the Happy Leadership style.

Happiness is a leadership asset. When a leader is happy and optimistic he behaves in a way that promotes these feelings to the people he is in charge of.

Take a minute to ponder on this...

Do you find yourself feeling more eager to deliver when your boss is pleasant to be around?

On the contrary, don’t you feel unwilling to engage in your tasks when your manager is grumpy, pessimistic, and holds back in offering praise for your effort?

The happy leadership style is more needed now than ever before.  It’s not so much of a science (although it is backed up with scientific evidence and stats) but more of pure common sense.

How Does Happy Leadership Promote Successful Teamwork?

Happy workers deliver better and have more chances to put their best foot forward on the job.

They are more productive, more creative, and more loyal to the company. Satisfaction at work goes hand in hand with better outcomes.

And although happiness is first and foremost a personal responsibility, it is true that a person who leads a group of people, whether it is a small team or a whole organization, can make a difference and influence his people’s mood toward a happier level.

Happy feelings are contagious.  It only gets you some minutes around a pleasant person to have your spirits lifted.

Studies have shown that happy people tend to be much more connected to other happy people within a network. And this applies in the workplace as well.

And although happiness is often considered a rather “fluffy” concept, especially in the professional field where severity and austerity hold the reins, the truth is that a happy working atmosphere plays a crucial part in a team’s success by strengthening teamwork.

But you know how the saying goes; the fish stinks from the head.

So, if the leader won’t take action toward creating a happy environment in the workplace, then who will?

This task is even more important these days because the whole working arena is threatened by high levels of uncertainty and unpredictability that affect the workforce around the world.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the scenery radically. Another core reason why the happy leadership style is more needed now than ever before.

So, how can happy leadership instill happiness in the team and promote teamwork?

Another great post on the happy leadership topic:

5 Ways Happy Leadership Promotes Successful Teamwork

Promoting teamwork and thus better results that can be translated to profits and gains for all, starts from happiness and a pleasant atmosphere in the workplace.

And you, as a leader, can be the “abettor” of this. So, here are five easy ways to support you on that mission:

1. Crack some jokes

A dose of humor has never killed anyone. Instead, it can nudge your staff into feeling more relaxed, connected, and happier.

Laughter has proven to be a stress reducer factor since it improves breathing and increases the natural hormones that are responsible for a lifted spirit.

So, next time you pass by that department, crack a joke and ask your personnel to share something funny that happened during their work.

It’s an easy but highly effective way to spread happy vibes in the team.

2. Be kind to your people

Rudeness and abruptness fight positivity. And they sure as hell don’t come hand in hand with happiness.

Happy leadership abstains from giving rude commands, being ironic, or even worse, insulting.

You can’t expect people to work with eagerness when you are not being kind to them. They can deliver the job but they will do it out of pure duty and while swearing secretly.

And this will sabotage in the long run their well-being in the workplace and unfortunately their performance.

So, ask kindly for what you want and explain in a calm way what you expect from your team.

3. Make positivity a core value

How can you do that? Well, an easy way is to hold a meeting every week to discuss with your team what went well and what didn’t over the past week.

This is a great way to allow your team members to reflect on their work and their merit in the teamwork and gives you a chance to voice people’s achievements and little triumphs and the importance of teamwork.

Over time, and if you are being punctual to this meeting, you will see that teams begin to appreciate each other and create the so-called ‘positive resonance” a sought-after condition where good feelings build on each other and thus resulting in enhanced positivity.

4. Recognize, recognize, recognize,

Having empathy and the guts to praise others for their good performance, initiative, and creative thinking are essential elements of a good leader.

And a happy one as well. Because only when you have a positive stance you can see the positive in others and celebrate it.

Remember that people during work remain human and have needs they want to meet. A feeling of belonging, of having their effort recognized, of being considered as individuals and not as mere resources, machines, or numbers.

So, take some time to engage in meaningful talk about “how are they doing”, explain to them the company’s goals and how they matter in achieving those goals, and most importantly surprise them by genuinely recognizing their effort.

Don’t hold back on that. Send them a gratitude note to thank them for their work or throw a small team party at the office to celebrate a milestone they reached.

5. Value each role in your team

For a team to be functioning every role counts and is essential. From the person with the more “high-status” tasks to the one that does what everyone else hates doing.

It’s the leader’s responsibility to value the distinct role each team member has and communicate the importance of each role to everyone.

It is a matter of respect and feelings of respect and appreciation promote happiness and strengthen teamwork.

Happy Leadership Promotes Successful Teamwork

So there you have it. Happiness can be that crucial element that gets your team working better, being more productive and creative, and less willing to search for another job outside your company.

Having that in mind, it could be good for you – and your people – to cultivate an optimistic aura around your presence in the office.

If, on the other hand, you are not so high in the hierarchy ladder (yet) you can also take steps towards making your working days happier and more satisfactory.

Everyone can be a leader in a sense so why not start building up some leadership qualities in yourself beginning with the easiest ones, like happiness, and an optimistic view?
