As we approach the end of 2021, I wanted to personally reach out and thank you for being a valued Elevated Awareness client and enthusiastic supporter.
Most important lesson I learned in the year 2021
If 2021 has taught me anything, it’s the message to treasure family and friends and not take for granted the time we spend together. There’s beauty and magic in creating traditions specific to our family. My daughter and I established a new tradition this season and that’s to play a few rounds of backgammon after diner. The same game I watched the adults in my family, growing up in Athens, play over loud discussions and dice clicking.
Speaking of rituals and traditions I couldn’t resist mentioning a favorite Greek ethimo (tradition) practiced on New Year’s Day. The infamous “pomegranate smashing”, and that’s exactly what it is, literally. The first person to enter the home, after midnight on 12/31, is to throw a pomegranate on the ground and watch it smash to smithereens. The tiny red juicy seeds that jump out the fruit symbolize abundance for the new year. Needless to say, the more seeds spilled the better!
One more favorite...
Another favorite of mine that comes to mind, is the “podariko” –footing. At the stroke of midnight my sister and I were sent outside our home entrance and asked to walk back-in using the right foot first. This was to bring good luck for the rest of the year.
The happy memories are made of...
These and more are the little things that my parents shared with us and have stayed with me throughout time. This year, being the first year without having mother around, I want to ensure my daughter remembers our family’s traditions. The little things we do and often take for granted, I now know these are the things that through time become the glue that connects the family, even long after we’re gone.
So, my dear visitor...
…if you were to reflect upon your family’s traditions what sweet memories come to mind?
