Ever wonder why as humans we carry the urge to feel happier? The answer is rather simple; happiness is an essential element of life.

Yet, if you feel unhappy, how can you start truly enjoying your days on earth?

For sure, life is not always smooth and easy; its bumps and bruises may deprive you of the feeling of happiness. But some people experience unhappiness for reasons that don’t seem to actually be worth it.

Why Do You Feel Unhappy?

There can be a bunch of reasons for your unhappy mood. And some of them can be pretty understandable.

The loss of a loved one, a divorce or a heartbreak, a serious illness, getting fired from your job, or coming face to face with some kind of failure. Life is unpredictable and no one can avoid unhappy feelings.

However, there are some other factors, not so serious as the ones mentioned before, that can as well deprive you of your happiness. Let’s have a look at them.

Overthinking

Overthinking can be exhausting. When you worry constantly about the future or the past, the things you have to do, what you could have done, and how you can control the situations around you, you leave no room to yourself to live in the moment and enjoy it.

It is true that the modern world is very challenging and requires you to be some kind of hero to get by. But letting your head get overloaded with thoughts and anxiousness won’t get you far. And most importantly won’t let you enjoy life’s journey.

Perfectionism

Perfectionism is another happiness killer. You know that never-ending voice in you that finds everything in your life lacking in some way. You don’t think you have enough money so you work harder. You don’t think you are attractive enough so you spend large amounts of money on plastic surgeries and expensive clothes. Or you go on diet after diet and beat yourself up in the gym to acquire the body you see on Instagram’s influencers.

Whatever the case, you don’t see yourself or what you have as enough, and you constantly strive for more. But perfectionism is actually a bottomless bin that makes you sink deeper and deeper every time and steals away your happiness. How can you be happy if you always think that there is always more and you got to have it?

Resentment

Resentment is about feeling bitter for having been treated unfairly. It goes along with anger and passive aggressiveness, replaying in your head the event that triggered those feelings, wishing to retaliate the wrongdoing regardless if it was real or perceived.

Holding a grudge sets up a trap that consumes a lot of mental and physical energy that you can alternatively use in more effective ways and enhance your happy vibes.

So, how can you escape these 3 major happiness “thieves” and bring joy back into your life? Here are 3 simple steps to help you feel happier.

1. Gratitude

Acknowledging the good things in your life is the first step. Counting your blessing makes you focus on the good stuff and recognize its importance. How often do you pause and feel lucky that you are healthy, you have all your fingers intact, a roof over your head, and food in your fridge?

Gratefulness is the igniter of happiness. So, why not start to write down every day 10 things you are grateful for in your life? Very soon, happy feelings will truly overwhelm you and you will feel happier for sure!

2. Meditation

Meditation quiets the mind and balances your hormones’ function. If done regularly it can lift your spirits and make you feel more connected with your higher self, nature, humanity, and life itself.

Taking some time every day to keep still, breathe deeply and silence that mind chatter can leave you feeling calmer, more peaceful, and in the long run happier. So why not switch your phone to the fly mode, and see how it goes?

3. Forgiveness

Forgiveness is not about the person you hurt you. Is about you and your peace of mind. It is about letting go and taking your power back without necessarily letting others know you forgive them or demanding their apologies. This helped me feel happier in my life especially when I was faced with difficult personalities.

Forgiveness is a liberating experience that helps your soul get rid of poisonous emotions like resentment, bitterness, and vengefulness that distract you from other important things in life, and steal away your happiness. 

All great teachers of human history (from Jesus to Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King) highlighted the importance of forgiveness to feel happier.
